Originally, the walkways between meru were covered, and a wooden chapel sat in front of the courtyard.
The temple also featured ornate reliefs which depicted stories of the Buddha’s past lives. Most did not survive however remains of the reliefs can still be seen.
One historical account from a traveller describes the temple being covered with gold and gemstones. Other details described included large stone guards and tigers at the entrance and numerous lacquered and solid gold Buddha statues.
